Technology & Research

Using cutting-edge technology in patient care is paramount in the rehabilitation excellence offered to Madonna's patients.

Madonna’s Research Institute is located within the hospital facility and collaborates with researchers, clinicians, academic scientists and business leaders across the country to develop and patent new technology. The Research Institute is, in essence, a living laboratory that focuses on helping patients to develop technological solutions to aid in therapy and to return patients to their life roles.

Madonna features translational research to take an idea from study, to research, to implementation. These advancements in technology enhance Madonna’s ability to provide specialized treatment, allowing patients to achieve a higher level of independence and participate more fully in their life roles.

Madonna’s Institute for Rehabilitation Science and Engineering received an “Exemplary” designation in the latest CARF accreditation.

Centers of Excellence

Three Centers of Excellence are located within the Research Institute. The Movement and Neurosciences Center includes a state-of-the art laboratory for performing biomechanical and physiological analyses of normal and pathologic human movement.

The Communication Center focuses on collaborative research related to augmentative and alternative communication (AAC), assistive technology, and motor speech disorders.

The Clinical Informatics Center develops innovative and effective methods for identification, synthesis and communication of treatment-relevant data, in formats and timeframes that provide real-time decision support for rehabilitation treatment planning and service delivery.

Madonna's ICARE

The Intelligently Controlled Assistive Rehabilitation Elliptical trainer (ICARE) was developed specifically to help individuals with physical disabilities and chronic conditions improve their walking ability and cardiovascular fitness. The technology and training system, developed at Madonna, helps individuals build strength, mobility, control and endurance so that they can walk and move more easily.

The ICARE is now licensed in 60 countries and is being sold to rehabilitation facilities and VA hospitals across the nation.
